It took only six days to construct the new Starbucks in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
The store, which includes a café and drive-thru, was designed, manufactured, and assembled by Vancouver-based green building company Nexii Building Solutions with minimal construction waste. It is designed to reduce energy needs for heating and cooling compared to traditional construction builds.
Nexii's CEO, Stephen Sidwell, stated that sustainability is at the core of all aspects of the Nexii system, from the products they create to the way they assemble their buildings. This allows them to create affordable, green buildings.
The manufacturing process enabled a fast assembly. The panels for the roof and walls were designed and manufactured offsite, and the optimized manufacturing and simplified assembly reduced construction waste compared to typical industry standards.
The Abbotsford store also want build prebracated build, which is part of Starbucks' global sustainability strategy, which aims to store more carbon than the company emits, reduce waste sent to landfills, and provide more freshwater than the company uses. Starbucks has set a goal to reduce its carbon, water, and waste footprints by 50% by 2030.
